has anyone ever slimmed up the wiring harness?

got a chopper in the works and am wanting to use the bare necessities. Hi/lo beam. Brake light, and starting system. I got the wiring harness of and have a manual, but am a little confused on the ignition circuit. It's got crap I've never heard of before... signal generator? Pick up coil? What the hell is that crap? Do I need it to start the bike?
